Less than 24 hours until I’m less happy than I was

Tomorrow, January 20th, there are a lot of things going on in my life. It’s a Friday and that means lots of end of the week family things like pizza Friday dinner, playing some games, and making sure that we’re ready for a Sunday of football as we come toward the end of the NFL season. We’re in the process of buying a house, and are stressed about that as well. We’re sleep deprived, cranky and doing our best to be kind to each other as we come to the close of the week. I’m not as happy as I could be certainly.

However it’s not just the close of the week tomorrow. It’s the close of an era where we had reasonable, moral, intelligent leadership in our country. It’s the end of actual governance by decent human beings with differing opinions about our country, and the beginning of a really shitty reality show that could do lasting damage to our country. I’m about to be less happy than I was.

We start with the President Elect who has so many flaws and insecurities that I wouldn’t be surprised if he commented about my blog post via twitter saying… “Buying a house that I could buy from the change in my pocket and lying about me. Pathetic. Sad.” He’s a petty, misogynistic, narcissistic bully with absolutely no skin. That’s right, I don’t think he has thin skin but rather he has no skin. He’s like a petulant toddler who abuses every bit of power his money can buy him as he walks over anyone he thinks can’t oppose him in court. He doesn’t care about you, and he doesn’t care about me and my family. He cares about himself, and that’s pretty much it.

That’s who we have elected and it makes me sad, worried, sickened and angry all at the same time. I haven’t had this many emotions going on in my life in decades.

He shows his lack of understanding of how this country works by choosing a bunch of millionaires, billionaires and clueless supporters for his cabinet. People who have no idea what they were nominated to do based on the confirmation hearings they’re going through. And by the way, the lack of diversity in that cabinet really shows me what Trump thinks of anyone who’s not an older, white male. He’s trying to put together the least diverse cabinet we’ve seen in decades.

The picks do seem to have one thing in common with Trump though. When asked how they will do the job they are being asked to do they say the same thing that Trump did, which is that they’ll “hire the best people” who will do the job for them. They’ll just manage the people who actually know what is going on and then try to take the credit for it because they have no idea what they are doing. They certainly weren’t vetted before being chosen. There was only one pick that I didn’t immediately have an objection to, and that was the Secretary of Defense pick Mattis. Not crazy about him, but at least he knows what he’s doing which is better than all of the other picks.

So tomorrow is a big day. It’s a historic day where over 60 million of our fellow citizens are going to rejoice at who we have as a new president. A president who is liable to destroy our relations with our allies, to destroy our natural resources, destroy the safety net for our elderly, destroy our education system, destroying our economy and destroy our standing in the world as a leading nation.

If he wants to do what’s best for the country and not just for him and his billionaire friends I’m for it.

If he ends up pushing to repeal the ACA to replace it with a single payer system I’m for it.

If he ends up closing tax loopholes and making the tax system progressive again with the wealthy paying a larger share than the poor I’m for it.

If he creates a huge infrastructure project that he can get passed through congress that puts millions of people to work and rebuilds our roads and bridges I’m for it.

If he causes the middle class to grow again with his policies I’m for it.

If he causes our education system to become one of the top in the world and stops our college grads from getting out of college under crushing debt I’m for it.

If he values science and does what he can to advocate for science based policy I’m for it.

If he values diversity and advocates for the civil rights of all I’m for it.

I would be the first to publicly say, when presented with reasonable evidence that his policies helped us all instead of hurt us all that I was wrong about his presidency. That although I don’t like him and think he’s a really crappy human being, he did the right things to help us. I’m not hopeful, I’m not optimistic about any of it. I think that in 2 years we may be in the worst shape economically that we’ve been as a country in decades. I think that by year 4 if we make it that far without a huge scandal that causes an impeachment we’ll start to see some really ugly things in our country. That ugliness has already started with Trumps rhetoric creating hate and division, and I don’t see it getting any better any time soon.

But I’m willing to admit I’m wrong, and I invite Trump to prove me wrong on all of it by growing up, going to work for our benefit and not his, and making sound decisions with the help of actual experts and not just supporters and friends from Mar-a-Lago.

I’m really not that happy right now, but tomorrow I’ll be less so.
